Gunkanjima, an abandoned Japanese island, was the home for over 5,300 coal miners and was the world's most densely populated island. In 1974 it became completely deserted and is now just a bunch of urban ruins.
Surtsey, an island near Iceland, was formed in a volcanic eruption that started in 1963 and lasted till 1967. It gave the scientists an opportunity to watch an island form and life settle on it.
